Curricula informed by critical race theory and the anti-racist movement are encouraging children to view themselves as victims or oppressors based on the color of their skin. It is possible to educate students about the country’s flawed racial record without devaluing the progress the nation has made or exaggerating the role racism plays in American society today. Parents have a right to object to educational materials they fear are sowing racial division.
Educators should expose students to the racial atrocities that have defined America’s past and the systemic racism that continues to shape its present. Conservatives have cynically mischaracterized critical race theory to score political points and stir the anger of voters who fear they are losing their white privilege. The resolutions some jurisdictions have passed are dangerously vague, undermine freedom of speech, and will prevent honest discussion in the classroom.
The pro/con article links to rich related resources that enhance the debate.
