Approximately 570 video clips have just been added to Ancient and Medieval History, including clips from two series from the BBC: The Art of China and The Silk Road: Where East Met West.
In The Art of China, Andrew Graham-Dixon sets out to discover what makes Chinese art and sculpture so intriguing and unique. With access to the very best of China’s art over 3,000 years, he explores the historical context in which the paintings, sculptures and other pieces were created so that we can better appreciate them. The series takes Graham-Dixon on an extraordinary journey around China, visiting stunning locations that inspired Chinese artists over the centuries as he assesses Chinese art from 1000 BC to the present day.
Covering 5,000 miles, passing through 13 countries, and crossing some of the most dramatic landscapes on the planet, The Silk Road: Where East Met West tells the fascinating story of the lucrative trade route that changed the course of civilization forever. Dr. Sam Willis explores how the fortunes of the West were shaped by the East, beginning with the story of a Chinese emperor who was so desperate to protect his lands against his enemies that he reached out beyond his borders into the unknown, for one of the most important game changers in human history—horses. And in return for these legendary steeds, the emperor was willing to trade the most precious material in his world, silk.
